Abstract: The second session of the Problems and Possibilities of Early Medieval Diplomatic strand looks at Continental charters from three temporal perspectives. Hofmann investigates the wish for document-making by using her electronic edition of the Codex Diplomaticus Fuldensis to contextualise questions about religious donation by women. Davies looks at production of our evidence, asking what can be known about local priests who often wrote charters for their communities in Spain. Finally Ralston examines preservation, asking why so few records of disputes survive in France and Germany, and exploring the disparity between this contemporary unimportance and their importance to modern scholarship.
