Abstract | The boundaries of late medieval communities could be indicated visibly, for example through the use of walls, but also invisibly through the inclusion and exclusion of its members. In this session, these boundaries and their enforcement are investigated with regard to urban and church communities in a number of European countries. The first paper considers two early witchcraft cases from Ireland and Norway which resulted in the exclusion from their communities of the female perpetrators in very different ways. In the second paper, the marginalisation of sex workers compared to other groups on the social margins is analysed for late medieval Poland. In the third paper, an investigation of banishment and subsequent redemption offers insights into both exclusion and inclusion practices in the late medieval urban Netherlands. |
