AbstractThis first session in the 'Mourning and Remembrance' series of sessions focuses on physical tombs and their epitaphs. The first paper explores the circumstances behind the unusual reference to chantry commemorations on the tomb of a 15th-century former sheriff of London. The second paper uses evidence from late medieval funerary inscriptions to demonstrate how acting as an executor was regarded as a good work deserving of commemoration in its own right.
