Abstract | In the last two decades scholarship on female monasticism has greatly expanded our knowledge of these foundations and has helped overcoming misconceptions of older historiography. Despite these significant advancements, some core issues still need further revisions together with new studies on unpublished complexes or not still explored subjects. This is particularly evident for the Italian context. For this reason, the session will focus on some specific cases of female monasteries in Italy, exploring institutional aspects and the role of nunneries on the one side, and religious women in artistic patronage, devotional practices, and liturgical performances on the other. |
