Abstract'Violence' is a pervasive topic within scholarship of the Middle Ages. How an individual person related to violence depended greatly on what kind of violence is under investigation, from 'everyday' violence to organised warfare, from representations of violence to legal records of crime and punishment. Thus, when we speak of violence, what are we talking about? What counts as violence? The participants of this round table contribute a welcome variety of perspectives to this discussion, from material to literary to historical, including medieval warfare, the role of violence in government, the role of violence in history writing and group identity, as well as institutional violence such as torture.

Participants include Susan Foran (Mittuniversitetet, Sundsvall) and Larissa Tracy (Longwood University, Virginia).
