AbstractThis session examines the role of place, whether static or dynamic, within European and Mediterranean spiritual communities. The communities in question were defined in part by relationships with the divine, mediated through historical prophets and saints, and enabling a powerful shared sense of identity and purpose. These papers explore ways in which the visual and material arts might be used to foster, expand, and/or continue a sense of communal identity, often transcending physical and chronological boundaries.
